This course is appropriate for those that are new to BAS.

This course is designed to support the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) using The Continuum of Literacy Learning to link assessment to instruction for comprehensive assessment reliably. By matching students’ instructional and independent reading abilities, participants will understand how to use the F & P Gradient to effectively match, and scaffold, readers to appropriate text.

Course Outcomes:

  • Understand the value of benchmark assessments that incorporate qualitative judgments and quantitative analysis of student outcomes.
  • Learn and practice with the coding of oral reading, or taking of running records.
  • Learn how to administer all facets of the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark System to include: oral reading, fluency, phonics, comprehension, and writing.
  • Practice with scoring, analysis, and interpretation of all facets of the Benchmark System to include: oral reading, fluency, phonics, comprehension, and writing.
  • Learn the benefits of data gleaned from benchmark assessments, and how to use them for planning and on-going instruction.
  • Participants will understand the distinction among Independent, Instructional, and Hard levels of reading in order to properly align and scaffold learners' needs by matching readers to appropriate text using the F & P Gradient.
